“It is extremely positive to see that motorcycle registrations in 2014 were at their highest since 2009, suggesting that the improving economic recovery is finally having a positive effect on bike sales”, said Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.

Sales in December were up 10.6% with 4554 bikes registered in the month - pushing overall sales figures in 2014 over the 100,000 mark.

The most significant growth was seen in the 51 – 125cc sector. Many of these models were purchased for commuting purposes, again possibly due to the upturn in employment growth. It is also encouraging to see continued growth in this sector as these models are typically purchased by new riders entering the bike market, therefore indicating 2014 was a good year for bike enthusiasts.

The 651 – 1000cc sector saw an increase of 18.3% and the over 1000cc sector saw an increase of 13.7%. This suggests a general upturn in consumer confidence coming from the experienced bikers who use their motorcycles for leisure purposes. According to dealers, these are more profitable sales as they also generate demand for extras, options and accessories.

In the ‘style sectors’, naked motorcycles showed the largest growth of 32.1% across 2014, however most of this growth came from the 125cc sector which saw a slight decline in scooter sales – where the younger rider typically prefers to ride a bike built to a basic specification.

Latham continued, “Throughout 2014 many manufactures have adapted and modified their product offerings to reflect the current demands in the market place, with many dealers reporting a general improvement in interest and demand.

“Consumer confidence and a growing economy will contribute towards a strong motorcycle market in 2015.”
