NAB Seeks Courtesy Car Best Practice

The National Association of Bodyshops (NAB), has raised concerns about the way courtesy car damage is handled by insurers.

Currently, if a courtesy car is involved in an accident, there is no official procedure on how a resulting insurance claim is handled. Therefore the NAB has contacted the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in order to meet with them to establish a formal protocol for the handling of courtesy car claims. This would not only benefit Bodyshop businesses but would also avoid any unnecessary stress to the consumer.

Frank Harvey, Head of NAB commented “Courtesy cars, understandably, are an expected service required by drivers whilst they have their vehicles repaired.

“However when issues such as insurance cover, responsibility for damage to courtesy vehicles and liability for parking fines and other offences arise it is often NAB members that are left to deal the aftermath. We are seeking agreement on a clear set of rules between vehicle body repair sector and the motor insurance providers.

“Some of the leading insurers are also indicating that they would like to see a clear protocol on the matter.

“With the assistance of NAB and forward thinking insurers, we hope that the ABI will be able to progress with such a protocol, in order to combat any misunderstandings surrounding the provision of courtesy cars and any damage claims and motoring offences that occur whilst the vehicle is being loaned to a customer.

“Replacement vehicles are an important part of the service our members and insurers offer and it’s therefore important that all parties work together to ensure that an agreed protocol is in place”
