NAB Submission to the Competition Commission

The RMI’s National Association of Bodyshops (NAB) submission to the Competition Commission concerning the proposed remedies following the private motor insurance market investigation has now been published on the Commission’s website. Please click here to view the our response.

Within the response NAB raised concerns surrounding approved repairer models and total losses.

The submission urged the Competition Commission to review the practice of claimant steerage used by some insurers and claims management companies, to ensure that consumers to have freedom of choice as to where they have their cars repaired. NAB believes this would increase competition within the repair sector and improve customer service.

NAB also expressed its concerns that some of the remedies proposed by the Competition Commission may result in additional financial burden being placed on already commercially suppressed repairers

Frank Harvey, Head of NAB commented “NAB was alarmed to see that the evidence we submitted to the Competition Commission surrounding consumer detriments arising from total loss procedures was overlooked in the original published findings.

“NAB asserts that the unregulated sale of written off vehicles has the potential for significant consumer detriment and poses risks to all road users. NAB also highlights that the higher prices currently being paid for motor vehicle salvage represent a wholly distorted market and has the potential to drive inappropriate and unethical behaviour, which in itself, is detrimental to all consumers.

“We will also continue to lobby for a pan-industry adjudicator, similar to that recently appointed for the supermarket sector. This adjudicator would act to address specific market concerns, to oversee any outcomes of the Competition Commission’s investigation and to prevent future car insurance market dysfunction”.
