New passenger car registration figures mark second strongest first half-year

NFDA 05/07/2017

“New car registration figures for June demonstrate the stability of the UK new car market. Although being -1.3% down on last year’s record performance, the market remains at near record levels marking the second strongest first half-year on record. Going forward, we anticipate a stable second half of the year as our members continue to experience good customer footfall", Sue Robinson, Director of the NFDA, which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle dealers in the UK, commenting on the latest SMMT’s registration figures.

New passenger car registrations declined by -4.8% in June, with 243,454 units. In the first half of the year, the market is -1.3% lower than last year to 1,401,811 units. Alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) rose by 29% in June, with a total of 8,258 AFVs registered in the month. Year to date, the segment is 27.5% higher than last year with 58,657 AFVs. Petrol registrations rose by 2.5% and diesel fell -14.7%.

Robinson continued, “The decrease in diesel registrations shows that there is some confusion surrounding diesel. Modern Euro 6 diesel cars should not be compared to older diesel vehicles.

“It is encouraging to see that more consumers seem to be shifting towards alternative fuel vehicles, which retain a record market share. This is particularly positive as NFDA members remain in the best place to service this burgeoning sector”.
