NFDA welcomes continued decline in pollutants in the UK

NFDA 16/02/2018

“It is positive to see that total emissions from motor vehicles declined by 12% from 2012 to 2016”, said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) commenting on the latest annual national emissions data from Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The report* released by the ONS shows that ‘there has been a long-term decrease in the emissions of all of the air pollutants’. In particular, emissions of nitrogen oxides in 2016 have fallen by 72% since 1970. These emissions fell by 10% in 2016 compared to 2015, a more positive decrease than the long-term trend average of 4.6% per year between 1990 and 2016. While diesel cars emit less CO2 than their petrol equivalents, diesel contributes to a higher extent to NOx emissions.

Robinson continued, “While we recognise that still a lot needs to be done, the progress made over the past few years is encouraging and demonstrates that new cars, which are built to meet stricter emission standards, are contributing significantly to reducing NOx emission levels.

“Going forward, it is crucial that confusion surrounding the air quality debate is clarified and well-targeted measures are implemented to ensure that motorists continue to replace their old cars with new, cleaner ones”.
