PRA comment on New Zealand’s plain packaging review

Published 19/02/2013 00:00:00 in Press Releases

“The Petrol Retailers’ Association (PRA) welcomes the news that New Zealand are pausing to fully consider the complex legal implications and specifically the outcome of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) challenge in Australia before implementing plain packaging for tobacco products” said Brian Madderson, PRA Chairman.

However, beyond the legal considerations, the PRA and its members believe that there are still further issues to consider in the UK such as the unintended consequences on the illicit trade in tobacco and the negative impact such legislation will have on small retailers.

Madderson continued “As many of these issues still remain largely unanswered I would urge the UK government to take this into account before making their decision on whether to introduce similar measures here.”
