PRA comment on speculation on the introduction of plain packaging

"The Petrol Retailers' Association (PRA) is deeply concerned about the speculation that the Government may introduce plain packaging here in the UK. We sincerely hope that this is mere insider gossip and that Government would think very carefully before proceeding down such a potentially damaging road” said Brian Madderson, PRA Chairman.

The PRA and its members believe that there are significant unintended consequences associated with such a policy, in particular increasing the already major levels of illicit trade in tobacco, which would have damaging consequences on small retailers and communities.

Madderson continued “Only last month we heard that New Zealand were pausing with regards to introducing plain packaging, to fully consider the complex legal implications and challenges in Australia. We strongly suggest UK Government does similarly, and focuses its efforts on introducing policies that are more thought through."

The Petrol Retail Association represents some 5,500 independent forecourts which is 60% of the total UK marker. A trade association committed to helping members run their businesses legally and profitably adapting to new challenges in the market place.
