“It is reassuring to know that bodyshops and vehicle manufacturers share the same concerns surrounding the current industry vehicle body repair standard” said Jason Moseley, Director of RMI Bodyshops, (which is comprised of the National Association of Bodyshops and the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association).

Commenting on the recent meeting held between RMI Bodyshops and the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders’ (SMMT) Vehicle Manufacturing working group – Vehicle Manufacturers Body Repair Working Group (VMBRWG) – which is headed up by Kevern Thompson and Dave Reece (11 May 2016), Mosley continued:

“This is the first real industry step in tackling the issues surrounding the vehicle body repair standard, BS10125. Currently, the requirements are inflexible to the needs and growth of the industry, especially with ever changing vehicle design.

“Requiring lengthy periods of time to update, as well as failing to recognise the model specific level of manufacturer training (as being compliant with the standard), the Standard has often resulted in additional training costs for the industry.”

Moseley continued, “it is fantastic that those who build the vehicles and those who repair them can form a united front on these issues. The key action points agreed at the meeting will now facilitate further and wider stakeholder involvement, which will look at the way in which the industry can begin to influence the direction and raise the changes required to the standard.”

In a recent meeting attended by the two trade bodies, a step forward was made by those currently governing the standard, accepting the need to implement changes by Autumn 2016.

Moseley finished, “We would welcome any of our members to contact us with any contributions they have surrounding the various issues, which can then be taken forward to a planned roundtable discussion.”
