NMDA DISAPPOINTED BY GOVERNMENT’S DECISION TO MAINTAIN CURRENT POLICY ON MOTORCYCLES IN BUS LANES
NMDA 21/11/2024
Today, 21 November 2024, the Government released the outcome of its consultation on motorcycles in bus lanes. The consultation, held earlier this year, presented two options: to maintain the current approach, allowing local authorities to decide on motorcycle access to bus lanes, or to allow motorcycles to access bus lanes by default. In its response, NMDA, as well as the wider sector, strongly advocated for the latter highlighting the benefits of treating motorcycles similarly to pedal cycles in accessing bus lanes. In the outcome, the Government noted ‘the safety benefits of allowing motorcycles into bus lanes are not clear’ and as such the Department for Transport does not intend to change any of the current restrictions as a result.
Symon Cook, Head of National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK commented:
“NMDA is severely disappointed with the outcome of the Government's consultation on allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes by default. Today's decision delivers another setback for current riders and risks further discouraging prospective riders, especially during a period of challenging market conditions for the sector. The Government's conclusion stated that the safety benefits of allowing motorcycles into bus lanes are not clear.
“In the consultation, NMDA strongly advocated for motorcycles to be allowed in bus lanes by default, similar to pedal cycles, emphasising the significant benefits including improved safety for motorcyclists and reduced congestion for all road users.
"Introducing a national standard would simplify the rules, making them easier for motorcyclists and all road users to understand. Despite the outcome, NMDA will continue to work with industry stakeholders to emphasise this directly with the Government. In December, NMDA, in collaboration with the National Motorcyclists Council, will host a Parliamentary breakfast with Parliamentarians, presenting an opportunity to further discuss the issue.”
