Independent Garage Association responds to Rachel Reeves’ Spending Review
IGA 13/06/2025
Having reflected on the Chancellor’s Spending Review, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) welcomes the focus on economic growth, particularly the commitment to regional investment and the enhancement of technical education. However, they are concerned that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), long described as the backbone of the UK economy, may once again have been overlooked.
While the regional and local growth fund is a positive step forward and the IGA supports the ambition to stimulate productivity across the country, the announcements lacked targeted measures to address the day-to-day challenges faced by the nation’s SMEs. Independent garages, along with other small businesses, are operating in a difficult economic climate and need tangible support to ensure long-term sustainability and job creation.
Jonathan Douglass, Director of the IGA, said: “We support the Government’s ambition for long-term, sustainable growth, and welcome the renewed focus on apprenticeships and regional development. Independent garages continue to provide vital services in keeping the UK mobile, and with the right support, the independent garage sector can help drive forward the UK’s economic and environmental goals.”
The Government recognises the importance of transitioning to net zero, with the EV sector playing a critical role in achieving this goal. Independent garages are essential to maintaining and servicing the UK’s growing electric vehicle fleet, however, greater investment in skills training, infrastructure, and accessibility for independent operators is needed to enable their full contribution to this transition.
Douglass commented: “We are encouraged by the Government’s commitment to review post-16 education and the expansion of apprenticeship opportunities. This is a welcome move for our sector, where skills shortages remain a serious concern. Strengthening vocational pathways will help to develop the next generation of highly skilled technicians and futureproof the workforce as the automotive industry continues to evolve.”
The IGA remains committed to working collaboratively with the government to ensure independent garages are empowered to thrive in the changing economic landscape.
