Approved Repairers and SERMI: Making Vehicle Access Simple

IGA 20/03/2026

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is helping independent garages navigate the SERMI scheme ahead of its UK launch on the 1st April. SERMI provides a secure and recognised route to access vehicle security-related information, ensuring independent garages can work on modern vehicles safely and efficiently.

Approved Repairers who already hold manufacturer-specific approval will continue to access vehicle information through those manufacturers, utilising their existing arrangements. However, SERMI will provide secure access for garages working on brands outside their approved manufacturer remit, as well as those using remote diagnostic services to conduct security related repairs.

The scheme provides independent garages with the confidence and compliance needed to access the information required for safe vehicle repair, ensuring all work, whether on brands outside of their approved status or via remote diagnostic services carried out within a recognised framework.

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, said, ‘SERMI is designed to support independent garages by providing secure access to vital vehicle information. For Approved Repairers, it complements existing manufacturer access, and for those working with new brands or using remote diagnostics, it ensures operations remain compliant and efficient.

Our role is to make the process straightforward and accessible. By sharing clear guidance, we aim to help garages plan ahead and make the most of what SERMI offers when it goes live.’

The IGA continues to provide advice and support for garages as they prepare for SERMI, including guidance on onboarding, DBS checks, and application timelines. Early engagement will ensure a smooth and seamless transition when the scheme launches.
